The Kauri Tree Problem
Once infected, the fate of the mighty Tree is sealed, rotting from the inside out.
With no ability to identify which Kauri Tree is infect and which is not, until they start to die, the drastic step has recently been taken by authorities to close at risk areas to all public and impose Controlled areas.
Parks with Closures
So far the park areas below have track closures, follow the links to see what remains open inside the controlled areas, and outside.
- Waitakere Ranges, Auckland
- Hunua Ranges, Auckland
- Goldies and Okura Bush, Auckland
- Coromandel Forest park
Alternative Open hikes
Sadly I find many of the “alternative hikes” listed by Park Authorities for the Waitekere Ranges, amount to far less than what I consider to be a hike in duration and distance.
So I will post the alternatives I know under my Tracks menu.
Tracks Re Opening
Auckland Regional Council are looking to re open a limited number of tracks, that have been upgraded to reduce the risk to the Kauri Trees. Some are already open while others are listed as being in the planning stages.
