Conditioning your body to Hike
I avoid the word “fit” like the plague, there is no such thing as fit really – its real definition being how fast you recover after a chosen exercise – not how good you are at doing it!
There seems to be a popular misconception that working out in the Gym, going running, cycling …are all good “training” for hiking, and that you can cross straight over in to medium to hard hikes with no difficulty… don’t do it!
Want the bad news? While some of these activities (not the gym) may well improve your overall cardiovascular reaction to exercise, recovery, and condition the specific muscles… it is to that activity – not hiking.
Unsurprisingly the best training for hiking is regular walking;
- It doesn’t matter if you go for 1/2 an hour or 1/2 a day – just go walking regularly.
- Wear trainers or hiking shoes, suburbia is not the right place for hiking boots – they are made for softer ground.
